The Friend is greater than our concepts of religion, greater than the structures we believe contain the Uncontainable by or limit the Limitless to. Religion exists for us, not the Friend: it is humankind who designates religion as the way to GOD but the Pre Existent was before all religions were, is where they are not, and exists where they cease. Allah is not constrained by or limited to religion, scripture, time or humanity. Allah simply is, whose existence is unrelated to these things, for they too cease.
The goal isn't the enforcing of religion but the pursuit and actualisation of Truth: this is the basis of Sufi Islam. Truth is found in many beliefs, many books, many practices and amongst many people which should not surprise us. Thus when religion gets in the way of the Friend it must be dispensed with or reinvented for part of being on Truth's path means recognising and removing barriers between ourselves and GOD. We are drawn to the One in love, by love, for love, so as to love and GOD is love.
